According to Aphrodite Karamitsenis (Place Names of Alberta) the mountain was named by James Hector. However Hector was never in the vicinity of this peak so this may be an error. James Hector originally applied the name Terrace Mountain to Mount Rundle in 1858. What is now Sulphur Mountain was referred to as Terrace Mountain on George Dawson's 1886 map.
