Peter and Catharine Whyte

PETER AND CATHARINE WHYTE After being raised in Banff, Peter Whyte travelled to the United States to study art where he met Catharine at the Boston School of Fine Art in 1927. They married in 1930 and made Banff their home and became very involved both in art and in the developing ski scene in the Canadian Rockies. In 1932 the couple sub-leased Skoki Lodge and operated it until 1934. Peter, in particular, painted extensively with many of his works being of the Skoki area. Peter passed away in 1966 but the couple was responsible for the development of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies which opened in 1968. Catharine remained very involved with the museum until her death in 1979.
