Hans Fuhrer

HANS FUHRER (1888-19??) Born in Switzerland, Hans Fuhrer moved to the United States with his brother Heinrich who was also a guide. During his career in the U.S. Hans completed more than 150 ascents of Mount Ranier and over 100 of Mount Hood before he and his brother began working as guides for the CNR in Jasper National Park in 1926. Hans worked for the CNR until 1932 and then guided independently for several years. In 1927 he led Alfred Ostheimer in the Columbia and Clemenceau Icefields, climbing 36 peaks in 63 days, 27 of them being first ascents. Ostheimer wrote of Fuhrer, ñI knew him to be a fine character, generous, interested and willing, with more than average red blood and energy, and gifted with a marvelous yodel.
