The son of Thomas and Wilhelmina Shankland of Fenelon Falls, Ontario, Private John Shankland was killed on November 9, 1917 at the age of 19. He was serving with the Canadian Infantry as a member of "A" Company, 20th Batallion, Central Ontario Regiment.
