The Stanford Range lies to the east of the head of the Columbia River Valley. It is bounded on the north by the Sinclair Canyon and on the south and east by the Kootenay River.

Edward Stanford was a London based map publisher. The feature was named by John Palliser and appears on his 1863 map.
