William Fitzwilliam

(1839-1877) Together with Walter Cheadle, Viscount Milton (William Wentworth Fitzwilliam) travelled up the Athabasca River and in 1863 they became the first "tourists" to travel through the Yellowhead Pass. Viscount Milton studied at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Arriving in Quebec City in July of 1862, Milton and Cheadle travelled across the continent, wintering near Fort Carlton. After a challenging and at times humorous summer they reached Victoria, BC. They later co-authored "The North-West Passage by Land" (London, 1865), which described their expedition in considerable detail. Viscount Milton became one of the youngest members of the House of Commons following his adventure in Canada. [See Mount Fitzwilliam] [See Bucephalus Peak]
