Walter Cheadle

(1835-1910) Together with William Fitzwilliam (Viscount Milton), Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle travelled up the Athabasca River and in 1863 they became the first ñtouristsî to travel through the Yellowhead Pass. Arriving in Quebec City in July of 1862, they travelled across the continent, wintering near Fort Carlton. After a challenging and at times humorous summer they reached Victoria, BC. They later co-authored "The North-West Passage by Land" (London, 1865), which described their expedition in considerable detail. Dr. Cheadle practiced medicine in London and served as dean of St. Mary's Medical School from 1969 to 1873. Mount Cheadle is located in the Monashee Range of British Columbia, on the east side of the North Thompson River valley, 25 km north of Blue River.
