Edward Norton (1884-1954) was a member of the 1922 and 1924 British expeditions to Mount Everest. Without oxygen, he reached 8230 m in 1922 and 8573 m in 1924. Norton spent much of his forty year military career in India, where he gained a reputation as a fearless horseman. He was said to have been "tall and imposing". He became a renowned linguist and birdlover. Norton served as Acting Governor of Hong Kong from 1940 until his retirement in 1942.
