Named for: Norton, Edward Felix (An ex-British military officer, Edward Norton was deputy leader of the 1922 Everest Expedition and leader of the 1924 British Expedition to the mountain during which Mallory and Irvine were lost.)

Edward Norton (1884-1954) was a member of the 1922 and 1924 British expeditions to Mount Everest. Without oxygen, he reached 8230 m in 1922 and 8573 m in 1924. Norton spent much of his forty year military career in India, where he gained a reputation as a fearless horseman. He was said to have been "tall and imposing". He became a renowned linguist and birdlover. Norton served as Acting Governor of Hong Kong from 1940 until his retirement in 1942.
