The mountain and the former railway station were named because of their proximity to the 1871-1872 winter camp of Walter Moberly (1832-1915), the chief engineer of the CPR survey at the time. As well as his work with the railway from 1871 until 1874, Moberly surveyed and explored in numerous other areas of British Columbia as well as in Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. A mine scar may be seen on the southwestern slopes of the mountain.
