In 1832 Ross Cox wrote a book entitled, "Adventures on the Columbia River. In his book, "The Glittering Mountains of Canada," J. Monroe Thorington quotes from Cox's journal as follows, "Close to our encampment one gigantic mountain of conical form towered majestically into the clouds far above the others (This is called M'Gillivray's Rock, in honour of the late Mr. William M'Gillivray, a principal director of the Company.)
