Part of the High Rock Range which forms the Continental Divide, The Elevators lie west of the upper Oldman River Valley. They are named because of their resemblance to prairie grain elevators which is most striking when viewed from the #2 Highway, just south of Claresholm. Although he visited western Canada long before grain elevators began to dot the prairie, George Dawson, who was the Assistant Director of the Geological Survey of Canada at the time, made a special note in his journals about these peaks when he travelled up the Oldman River to its headwaters in 1883. His August 10th entry noted that he, "took a photo of grand, rugged peaks of limestone though with rather poor light."
