According to B.C. Geographical Names, "In 1915, Chalres Ross Cross jr. was an ambulance driver during WW I who met with a fatal automobile accident and died of a broken back a few days later. The services were held in Paris, and were impressive, for an American giving up his life for the allies stirred everyone... Cross spent year after year among the mountains of British Columbia, Alberta and Alaska, and in earlier days made a name for himself as a climber in Switzerland. He loved the wilds in the true appreciative spirit of a nature lover.'"
