Named for: Buchanan, Senator William A. (Senator Buchanan played a significant role in the development of Waterton National Park and had a summer residence there.)

The ridge is about four km long. Its extension to the south reaches to the summit of Mount Carthew. Buchanan Peak lies about one km southeast of the highest point of Buchanan Ridge.
