The name was first used when it was applied to what is now Paradise Valley by Samuel Allen in 1894. Together with Walter Wilcox, Yandell Henderson, and George Warrington, Allen had reached the ridge just east of The Mitre to become the first to look down into the valley. According to Tim Matley, a Toponymist with the Geographical Names Board of Canada, there was a bit of a mix-up when the mountain was officially named in 1998. It was apparantly found during field work that the local usage name for this mountain was spelled "Wasatch" Mountain so that is what was adopted even though the nearby pass was named/spelled "Wastach" Pass. There were no recommendations provided about the appropriateness of the spelling of Wastach Pass. No proposals have been put forward to change the name or spelling of Wastach Pass.
