The surveyors noted in their report that the mountain was named after, "a very apparent physical feature." The word syncline is a geologic term which refers to rock layers which have been folded in such a manner that the beds have been forced down in the middle so as to form a trough. The mountain is has three high points and forms a horseshoe that contains the headwaters of Suicide Creek which flows out towards the northeast. A ridge form the centre highpoint connects Syncline Mountain with St. Eloi Mountain on the continental divide.
