Named for: Charles.S. Thompson, one of the earliest alpinists to visit the area, felt that the mountain to the right of Bow Glacier seemed to be a part of a gateway leading from the lake to the alpine area to the west.
Charles Thompson, one of the earliest alpinists to visit the area, felt that the mountain to the right of Bow Glacier seemed to be a part of a gateway leading from the lake to the alpine area to the west and so chose the name Portal Peak for the feature. Portal Peak is an southern outlier of Mount Thompson.
