Charles Pilkington learned most of his mountaineering skills in Switzerland. When he arrived in Skye in 1880, he assumed that these relatively small peaks would present little challenge. After a failed ascent of Sgurr nan Gillean, however, Pilkington developed a great love and respect for the Cuillin. He spent a great deal of time on Skye, making successful first climbs of many peaks, with the assistance of John MacKenzie.
