Private Pattison of Calgary, Alberta was serving with the 50th (Calgary) Battalion when he was he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Vimy Ridge in 1917. The troop?s advance was held up by an enemy machine-gun which was inflicting severe casualties. With utter disregard for his own safety, he ran forward, jumping from shell hole to shell hole until he reached cover within thirty yards of the enemy gun. Then, in the face of heavy fire, he hurled bombs killing and wounding some of the crew and then rushed forward overcoming and bayoneting the surviving five gunners. He was killed in action less than a month later. (see "A Legacy of Courage" by Fred Bagley) A bridge over the Elbow River in Calgary is named in his honour.
